Welcome to Empowered Journey Birth Services!  My name is Ann Cheesman and I am a DONA trained birth Doula serving families in San Diego.

The word “doula” is Greek in origin meaning “a woman who serves”. Here is a brief overview of the role of the modern day Doula:

A Doula provides emotional, physical and educational support to a woman and her partner throughout the birth process.  Doulas encourage families to research the many birth options available and can assist in gathering information and resources so that women can make the best possible decisions for themselves and their babies.

Once a woman enters her birthing time a Doula provides continuous emotional and physical, (non-medical) support. Although a Doula can be the sole support if a partner is not present, a Doula does not replace a partner who desires an active role in the birth process.  Doulas will work with a partner to facilitate a calm and peaceful environment for the birthing mom and her entire birth team.
